BBL Children exposure to Fleet Week

We had a wonderful start to our morning! All of the children who were awake between 10:00 and 11:00 a.m. had the opportunity to see the big ships pass by for Fleet week.

What an exciting sight to see--military planes flying overhead and the fireboat spraying arches of water.  Children were curious about the different types of boats that they saw. Some of the comments where “It’s a parade on water,” “Look, I hear the helicopter,” and “Where are they going?”

Two great books to help your child identify the different types of boats on the pier are Boats by Byron Barton and Harbor by Donald Crews. These books are a wonderful way to extend their vocabulary and classification skills.

One of the new activities planned by the Intrepid this year includes movies at the pier.

The Lineup for the 2011 Intrepid Summer Movie Series is:

  • May 27 at sunset:  Top Gun
  • June 24 at sunset:   Spiderman
  • July 8 at sunset:   The Goonies
  • July 22 at sunset:  Back to the Future
  • August 5 at sunset:  ET
  • August 19 at sunset:  Jurassic Park

Seating will be on a first-come, first-served basis. Visitors are encouraged to bring food and beverages to the screening, however alcohol is not permitted.

Don’t forget that the ferry boat stop in midtown leaves you about a block down from the intrepid.
